Tim Carey first learned to play the great highland bagpipe when he was six and a half years old. First tutored by his father he continued his musical education with the likes of Jack Chisholm, Bill Logan, John McFadyen, Duncan Johnstone, and George Steele. Tim won first place in his first international competition in Toronto, Canada at the age of twelve.

He won first place again the following year against a field of thirty-six players. His continued dominance in the amateur ranks led to his winning of his first professional prize in his first professional competition in 1971.

After competing in the professional circuit Tim decided to focus on playing in grade-one pipe bands. His exposure to playing with the famed City of Toronto Pipe Band led him back to the States to play with the Denny and Dunipace Pipe Band, the band he first started playing with in 1966.

He took over as pipe major of the band in 1982 through 1989 and stayed on with the band through its transition from being called The Scottish and Irish Imports Pipe Band to finally The City of Washington Pipe Band where he remains an active member.
